Former New York Knicks star, Amar’e Stoudemire, recently voiced his intense dissatisfaction and disappointment at politicians and Black Lives Matter advocates who have remained silent on Hamas’ recent attacks on Israel.
The surprise attack, credited to Hamas, a terrorist organization, has left a devastating impact with a reported death toll of over 1,200 from both sides, including nine Americans. This, for Stoudemire, was an awakening to the conflict. “Waking up to the news that Hamas is kidnapping children, placing them in cages, killing women and the elderly, is profoundly disturbing,” Stoudemire lamented in an emotional Instagram post.
Stoudemire’s affiliation with the Knicks spanned parts of five seasons from 2010 to 2015, cementing his legacy as a six-time NBA All-Star. But his connection with Israel goes deeper than basketball. After winding up his illustrious 14-year NBA journey with a one-day contract as a Knick in 2016, having had stints with teams like Dallas and Miami, Stoudemire’s next chapter took him to Israel. Playing for Hapoel Jerusalem and Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Israeli Basketball Premier League, he not only graced the court but also held a significant ownership stake in Hapoel Jerusalem. Under his influence, the team clinched a championship in 2017.
Stoudemire’s connection to Israel also has a spiritual dimension. He converted to Judaism in 2020, a year after gaining Israeli citizenship. Prior to his conversion, his ties to the Black Hebrew Israelite movement through his mother, Carrie, signified a personal and profound connection to the land.
In his video, Stoudemire issued a raw, uncensored challenge to politicians and Black Lives Matter supporters. “For all those silent on the issue, for those waiting to fully understand the situation before speaking out, this is a cowardly act,” he expressed.
Stoudemire’s passionate plea emphasized the unique significance Israel holds for him. He described it as the “only place in the world” where he can freely study the Torah and eat Kosher food.
While everyone has the right to choose their stance on the conflict, Stoudemire hopes that those with influential voices will step forward and denounce acts of violence and terror, regardless of their origin. The basketball legend’s message underscores the importance of understanding and compassion in such trying times.
